The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced a special assessment scheme for standard 10th and 12th Board exams for the year 2021-22. Under this scheme, the year will be split into two terms, with each term covering around 50% of the syllabus.

Term 1 exams will be held in November-December 2021 while Term 2 exams will take place in March-April 2022. Term 1 exam will be a 90-minute test of ‘case-based’ and ‘assertion reasoning’ MCQs and Term 2 will be a 2-hour long paper with open-ended, short & long answer questions.

Alternatives are in place in case the Covid-19 situation worsens and either Term 1 or Term 2 exams cannot be conducted. If cases rise around March-April 2022, Term 2 will be an MCQ-based online exam. If the situation remains stable in both the terms, theory marks of Term 1 will be divided in both the terms equally in the final result. If schools are closed for both the terms, internal assessments like projects and assignments will be taken into consideration. So, the marks’ weightage can change the basis of the Covid-19 situation.

The scheme will also rationalise the syllabus, i.e. cutting it down in order to decrease the burden on students and teachers. Internal assessments will be made more “credible” and “valid” and designed as per the guidelines and Moderation Policy to be announced by the Board.
