For those candidates preparing to take on the SSB interview, it is important to know what it means to be “Screened In” and “Screened Out”. Serious candidates for the defence services should know the meaning and implications of these terms. I will walk you through it step by step.

What Does "Screened In" Mean in SSB?

“Screened In” refers to those candidates who pass the first day of SSB tests, including the critical Stage 1 testing. They are allowed to continue with the remaining part of the 5-day interview process after stage one.

Stage 1 Includes:

Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) Test

Picture Perception & Description Test during OIR proceedings.

The ones who pass both the Officer Intelligence Rating and Picture Perception & Description Test are accepted in Stage 2 and proceed with the interview.

What Does "Screened Out" Mean in SSB?

Those who fail to pass the Stage 1 testing are labeled as “Screened Out”. Such candidates are excluded from the rest of the SSB interview process. Qualified candidates must leave on the same day of the test or early the following morning.

Note: Screening out is not a failure; it means you need more preparation before trying again.

Why is Screening Done in SSB?

By screening, SSB boards evaluate candidates on their suitability in terms of basic potential and psychological capabilities. With so many applicants, the search for the best candidates at the initial stages is essential.

How Can I Avoid Getting Screened Out in SSB?

It is less likely that you will be screened out if you focus on improving your skills in:<<

OIR Tests: Stay in touch with logical and verbal reasoning to improve your capabilities.

PPDT: Improve your observational skills, your storytelling skills, and your group discussions.

Using an SSB book that gives a lot of insights on these aspects, you will increase your chances of qualifying.

Does Being Screened Out Affect My Future SSB Attempts?

Not at all. You can apply for SSB as many times as you can, so long as you are eligible. Each time you try, you get additional chances to practice and raise your chances of success. Take into account what you learn from every SSB evaluation, and rely on a reliable SSB interview book to improve the strategy for subsequent efforts.

A well-thought-out strategy that is backed by a steady effort and insights from a SSB book, can significantly increase your chances of being selected and moving towards the desired outcome.
