It is very important for any teacher and students to build positive classroom culture right from the first day of school. Hearing a friendly and supportive tone with no negative words also promotes the overall academic and social well-being of children. That is why, when the students feel safe and can rely on the support provided by the teacher, they will be able to actively engage in the learning process, work in groups, as well as accept responsibility for their learning.

These are some positive approaches to establishing a positive classroom climate from the fist day of instruction:

1. Set Clear Expectations Early

At the start of the school year make sure to establish expectations, procedures, as well as policies of the class. You should engage the students in the process by having them contribute to the formulation of the norms of the class. When students participate in the formulation of the rules, it becomes easy for them to adhere to such rules. Make sure these expectations foster courtesy, collaboration, and accountability among the staff members.

2. Create a Warm and Inclusive Environment

The first thing should be to ensure that one learns all the students and at the same time ensure that all the students learn each other. Each student is welcome with a handshake and some icebreakers and team-building activities make students feel welcome. It will only take a day to embrace diversity means making classroom to be a safe environment for every student present. The environment should be made more interesting through the use of visual displays, bulletin boards, as well as students’ works.

3. Foster Strong Relationships

In other words, a positive classroom culture is one that is built on the foundation of the relationships. It is very important to spend some time trying to understand your students and their abilities and difficulties. To ensure that there is constant communication, the teacher should conduct daily check-ins or use journals and/or classroom discussions. It is after that the students feel comfortable to trust and participate with the teacher.

Allowing students to be part of the decision-making process in the class is a way of making them responsible for what happens in the class. Let them voice out their opinions, propose ideas on what they would like to do in the classroom and even give their opinions on certain issues. As much as possible, students should be allowed to participate in decisions that have an impact on them as this makes them feel valued and hence, more committed to learning.
