Olympiad Eligibility Criteria 2026: Age Limit, Class Eligibility & Qualification Rules
Understanding the Olympiad Eligibility Criteria is essential before registering for any SOF Olympiad exam. The Science Olympiad Foundation has laid out clear and inclusive eligibility rules to ensure students at every level — from Class 1 to Class 12 — can participate. This page covers eligibility criteria for all major SOF Olympiads, including NSO, IMO, IEO, IGKO, ICSO, and more.
General Eligibility Criteria for SOF Olympiads
SOF Olympiads are designed to be accessible to all school-going students. The general eligibility requirements are:
-
The student must be currently enrolled in a school recognised by SOF.
-
The student's school must be a registered participating institution with SOF.
-
There are no minimum marks criteria to apply for any SOF Olympiad.
-
Students from CBSE, ICSE, IB, IGCSE, and all state board schools are eligible.
-
Students with major physical disabilities are eligible and are exempt from registration fees.
-
Students whose parents were killed in defence or internal security operations are also eligible with fee exemption.

Age Limit for Olympiad Exams
SOF does not impose a strict age limit for its school-level Olympiads. Eligibility is determined by class/grade rather than age. Any student studying in Classes 1–12 in a registered school is eligible, regardless of age.
However, for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) conducted by HBCSE (a separate prestigious event from the SOF IMO), age-specific criteria apply:
|
Criterion |
Requirement |
|
Age as on 31st July of the exam year |
Must not have turned 20 |
|

Note: The SOF IMO (conducted by Science Olympiad Foundation) and the HBCSE IMO (representing India at the International Mathematical Olympiad) are different exams with different criteria.
Level 2 Eligibility: Who Qualifies?
