ISC Class 12 Board Exam 2027: Complete Preparation Guide for All Streams
ISC Class 12 board exam 2027 will be held in February to March 2027 for Science, Commerce, and Humanities streams. If you are staring down this exam right now, you already know the syllabus is long and the grading rewards structure, not just knowledge.
This guide walks you through the exam pattern, the syllabus for each stream, expected dates and a study plan that you can actually follow. Read it once, and then come back to the sections you need as you go through your prep.

ISC Class 12 Exam Pattern 2027
Paper Structure: Theory & Internal Assessment
In most ISC subjects, marks are divided between the written theory paper and internal assessment or practical work.

Physics, Chemistry and Biology: 70 marks and practicals for 30 marks.

Mathematics: 80 marks for theory and 20 marks for project work.

English: 80 marks for theory and 20 marks for internal assessment.
Notice the pattern: Internal assessment is never a rounding error. It can be the difference between a 78 and an 88.
Section-Wise Format For Major Subjects
English is divided into two papers.

Language tests comprehension and composition.

Literature covers prescribed prose, poetry and drama.
Mathematics has three divisions.

Sections B and C are optional - you must answer 4 out of 6 questions in each section.

Section C covers applications in statistics, linear programming and finance.
Decide early in your prep which topics you will master for these optional sections, so you’re not deciding under exam pressure.
Science follows similar logic: each has its own separate pass requirement. So a strong theory score does not make u\p for a weak practical one.
What Changed in 2027 Compared to 2026
CISCE has released specimen papers for the 2026-27 session, confirming that the marking scheme and question types will remain mostly unchanged from recent years. The board characterises this cycle as a time of clarity and simplification rather than structural overhaul. The paper you practise on today looks like the paper you will sit in 2027. That is good news – old specimen papers are still your best training tool.
ISC Class 12 Syllabus 2027: Stream-Wise
Science Stream
Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics form the core.

Chemistry splits into organic and inorganic reactions. Both are important, so do not focus on one and ignore the other.

Biology covers genetics, human physiology, ecology, and biotechnology, and it values diagrams and accurate terminology as much as correct facts; a correct answer with a messy diagram loses marks.

Maths has algebra, calculus, vectors and probability. Section B/C choice decides how much of the syllabus you need to know by heart.
Commerce Stream
It includes Accounts, Economics and Business Studies from the Commerce stream.

Accounts is procedural - examiners want your journal entries, ledgers and financial statements to be in a certain format, not just the right number.

Economics is a field that rewards students who can define a concept and tell the reason.

Business Studies is very case study question based so practise applying the theory to scenarios as opposed to just memorising the chapter summaries.
Humanities Stream
Here are History, Political Science, Sociology and Psychology, sometimes with Geography in school combinations.

History: Covers Indian history from early modern period to contemporary period, plus twentieth century world history.

Political Science: Indian government and politics, international relations and political theory.

Sociology: Deals with social institutions, social stratification, social change and Indian social problems.

Psychology: Includes the biological basis of behaviour, cognitive processes, human development, and applied psychology.

Geography: Often included in humanities combinations, covering physical, human, and Indian geography.
All the way through, it’s about how well you can make an argument. A long answer must contain a clear point, evidence to support it, and a conclusion, all expressed in full sentences rather than bullet points.
Compulsory Subjects: English
English Language and Literature- applicable for all streams. Language tests grammar, understanding, and formal writing. Literature tests your reading of prescribed texts - prose, poetry and drama from the CISCE anthology. 20-mark project component rewards consistent work throughout the year, so don’t leave it to the last few weeks.

How to Use ISC Sample Papers And Previous Year Papers
Sample papers are the best thing you will get for a preview. Use them correctly: do one specimen paper per subject straight after finishing that unit, not in the last week before the exam. Compare your answers with the official marking scheme, not just your own gut feeling of whether the answer sounds right. CISCE gives marks for method, especially in Mathematics and Accounts. Bring in 5 years of previous papers and make a note of which topics repeat every year. Those topics are not optional to review. They are the backbone of your score.
ISC Preparation Guide for Class 12: Stream-Wise
Science
Match each theory chapter with numerical practice - five to ten problems minimum before you move on. Diagrams require repetition, not just recognition: you need to be able to draw and label them from memory. Practicals are real marks, not bonus marks, and deserve the same planning as theory papers.
Commerce
Accounts are about how you write as well as what you write. Practise your ledger and journal presentation until it becomes automatic. In Economics, get in the habit of saying “why” before you say “what”. In Business Studies, do case studies regularly rather than leaving them until the last month.
Humanities
Build each extended response in a three-part format: state your argument, provide supporting data, and conclude with a conclusion. Try not to write in bullet points on theory papers. Examiners want to see how you construct an argument, not just your recall.
Month-Wise Class 12 ISC Study Plan
Months 6-5 before the exam: Do a first complete pass of each subject, one subject per day in rotation. At this point, don’t worry about mastery; think about coverage.
Months 4-3: Work on the weak areas you discovered in your first pass. Practise chapter-wise questions and make a note of the topics that still confuse you.
Month 2: Full length mock tests (2 per week), under timed conditions. Review every mistake before moving on to the next mock.
Last month: Move on to intensive revision of your own notes, not new material. Now is not the time for a new chapter; now is the time to tighten up what you know.
Internal Assessment and Project Work
Internal assessment is very important and includes projects, practicals and orals.

Weightage: Usually 20% of total marks and 30% in Science practicals.

Separate Passing Requirement: In most subjects, CISCE requires students to separately pass the theory and internal assessment sections. Project performance cannot compensate for a high theory score.

Science: Lab records and viva preparation are as important as the experiment itself.

English: A chapter of the syllabus requires the same planning as project work that is due throughout the year.

Commerce & Humanities: Internal assessment is often case studies or research-based projects. These are marked on the structure and originality rather than length.

Common Mistakes ISC Students Make
Most of the students forget that passing requirements are different for internal assessment in most of the subjects and only realise its importance after those marks are gone.
Another common mistake is not practising sample papers. Just reading the textbook doesn’t give the students a feel of the actual question pattern, especially when application based questions are given 40% weightage.
In Humanities, many students learn answers word for word rather than learning how to build arguments. So they might know the facts but still lose marks because their answers are not analysed and structured.
Practicals are often a token gesture for science students. This may cost them marks in any viva question that could have been prepared with just a little concentrated practice.
Maths is a challenge on its own. Students can waste valuable time deciding between Section B and C options instead of practising this decision beforehand. Those extra minutes can eventually eat up the time needed to actually solve the problems.

FAQs
Students must have at least 35% in each subject. A student will be given the pass certificate if he or she scores 35% in four or more subjects, including English.
Exact dates are yet to be announced by CISCE. For the 2026 cycle, which was held between 12th February and 6th April, a similar window can be expected for 2027, with the official date sheet expected to be out in November 2026.
English is the only compulsory subject. Students choose the other subjects from the Science, Commerce and Humanities groups. The total number of subjects should be minimum 5 and maximum 6.
Each subject comprises theory and internal assessment or practical. Students have to clear both separately in most subjects. CISCE now issues only one document, instead of two – the Pass Certificate Cum Statement of Marks, and reports the results as Qualified or Not Qualified.
Students must be at least 15 years of age in the year of examination. There is no maximum age.
