ISC Class 12 Physics Sample Paper 2027: Numericals, Derivations & Marking Scheme
The ISC Class 12 Physics sample paper 2027 is in accordance with the CISCE pattern: a 70 marks theory paper divided into four sections, and 30 marks for practicals and internal assessment. Theory marks are heavily weighted on numericals and derivations. CISCE gives marks for each step and not just the final answer.
This guide explains the pattern, how to write numericals and derivations, how marks are awarded and how to make the best use of the sample paper.
What is the ISC Class 12 Physics Exam Pattern 2027?
The theory paper carries 70 marks and has 20 questions divided into four sections. All questions are mandatory. CISCE provides 15 minutes of reading time, during which you cannot write anything. The other 30 marks are from the practical and internal assessment. The subject is worth a total of 100 marks.
The section-wise pattern of the CISCE specimen paper is as follows:

ISC Class 12 Physics Sample Paper 2027: Which Numericals Should You Practice?
Knowing the formula is half the work. The other half is how you write the answer. For all numericals, use this format:
-
Write the given data with units. Convert to SI units.
-
Write the formula.
-
Put the values (with units).
-
Calculate.
-
Write the final answer with the unit.
Draw a diagram when the question involves a circuit, a ray or a field. You do not have to memorise every value, as a list of useful constants is included at the end of the paper.
Numericals on Current Electricity and Electrostatics
-
Identify the closed surface you choose for Gauss's law and explain how it corresponds to the charge shape.
-
Write the series or parallel formula for capacitors before you put in values.
-
First, for Kirchhoff’s laws, mark the direction of the current in each branch. Then write the loop equation with the correct sign.
-
State the balance condition for potentiometer and Wheatstone bridge before you use it.
Numericals on EMI & AC Magnetism
-
Use Fleming's left-hand rule or the right-hand rule to write the direction of the force or field. Most students give the size and forget the direction.
-
State Lenz's law to give the direction of the current for induced emf.
-
For LCR circuits, find X_L and X_C first. Then calculate the impedance. Now find the current.
-
For transformers, write the voltage-to-turns ratio before you solve.
Numericals on Optics
-
Sign convention at start. Measure the distances from the optical centre, taking the object distance as negative.
-
Sketch the ray diagram, even a rough one. It helps you to verify the sign of your answer.
-
Put the signs inside the lens or mirror formula, not after.
-
Write the fringe width = λD/d for Young's double slit experiment. Check all the lengths in the same units.
Numericals in Modern Physics
-
Choose a single unit for energy, either joule or eV. Convert once only.
-
For the photoelectric effect, first write Einstein's equation, then separate the work function from the kinetic energy.
-
Write the energy level formula for Bohr's model and the value of n for each level.
-
Calculate the mass defect and convert it to energy for binding energy.

Most Common Derivations
Don’t learn a derivation as a block of text. Learn its ways. They each have a beginning, some important steps, and an end. For example:
-
Dipole field: Draw dipole, mark point, write field from each charge, then add.
-
Parallel plate capacitor: Write the field between the plates, find the potential difference, then divide charge by potential difference.
-
Solenoid: Take a rectangular loop. Use Ampere’s law. Count the number of turns in the loop.
-
Lens maker’s formula: write refraction at the first surface, then at the second surface, then add the two.
If you know the path, you can deal with a changed question, like a part of a derivation.

How to Write Derivation to Score Full Marks
-
Draw a neat labelled diagram.
-
State the law or principle used.
-
Write the assumptions, if any.
-
Write one step on each line. Don’t miss a step.
-
Box or underline the final answer.
Use the symbols given in the question. Whenever you first use a new symbol, define it.
ISC Class 12 Physics Marks Distribution by CISCE
CISCE awards step marks. If the right method is used, a wrong final answer can still gain most of the marks.
A 3-mark numerical can be broken down into parts:
-
Right formula
-
Proper substitution
-
Right answer with unit
You could mark a 3-mark derivation step by step:
-
Diagram
-
Correct step
-
Conclusion
Examiners are looking for labelled diagrams, SI units and clear working. If the question has an internal choice, answer only one choice. Pick it before you begin to write.
