Is NEET 2027 a CBT or Pen Paper Exam?
NEET 2027 will be a computer based test (CBT) and not a pen and paper exam. The government has announced that NEET-UG will shift to CBT mode from the traditional pen-and-paper format from 2027. Your answer will appear on screen. No OMR Sheet will be provided.

Why is NEET 2027 Shifting to CBT?
What happened to NEET 2026?
NTA conducted NEET UG 2026 on May 3 in pen and paper mode from 2 PM to 5 PM. The exam was cancelled after a paper leak. NEET Re-exam was on 21st June. No re-registration was needed, and the re-exam was still pen and paper mode.
What the Expert Panel Recommended?
NTA told the Supreme Court that a high-level expert committee recommended shifting NEET-UG from pen and paper to a computer-based test (CBT), along with multi-session and multi-stage testing.
The affidavit states NEET (UG) 2026 was the only major exam of NTA which was still on paper. The main reason for this, according to NTA, was the scheme of the Health Ministry and the National Medical Commission. According to news reports, the Radhakrishnan committee also pointed to the OMR-based system as a weakness for paper leaks.
How CBT Helps with Security?
A paper exam requires question papers to be printed, packed and sent to each centre. There can be a leak at every step.
In CBT, the questions are sent to the centre in digital form, so fewer people have to handle paper. Reports also say that NTA is planning to have fewer centres in 2027 so that it can keep a closer watch on them. More on that below.
Is NEET 2027 Online or Offline?
It’s online, because you need to answer on a computer. It is not an exam to be taken from home. The CBT will be conducted at NTA authorised centers.
Easy way to remember the terms:
-
Offline is paper-based. NEET 2026 was in offline mode.
-
Online or CBT means computer based at an exam centre. NEET 2027 will be held online.
-
NEET registration has been online since the beginning. That's nothing new.
What Remains Same in NEET 2027?
Syllabus
Only the mode of exam has shifted from offline to online CBT. NTA has not declared any change in the syllabus. Keep studying the same chapters.
Question Types & Topics
NEET UG will test Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Botany and Zoology) through multiple-choice questions. NTA has not released 2027 pattern. The pattern should be the same as 2026, with only the mode changing from OMR to CBT. Expect this, not final.
Eligibility & Exam Centres: Use Only That As Confirmed By NTA
Age limit, eligibility rules and exam city list are as per the official information bulletin of NTA. NTA has not yet published the information bulletin for NEET UG 2027. Don’t do anything based on a claim until you see that document.
There are two reports you need to know about centres. Many technical colleges have the infrastructure for the exam, and NTA has sought the help of AICTE to identify such centres. Almost 1,000 centres were being considered in about 500 cities, the Indian Express reported. These are reports, not final figures.

What’s Different for Students?
Using Screen to Answer Instead of OMR
You will see each question on a computer, and you will click the answer. You will not fill in bubbles with a pen.
NTA’s other computer-based exams such as JEE Main have a question palette and mark-for-review option. As per reports, the NEET CBT screen will be like the normal NTA exam screen. NTA has not yet shown the NEET screen. Whenever it is shown, you can check the demo on the official site.
Potential Multiple Shifts & Scoring Normalisation (Label as Expected)
Not confirmed, but likely. NEET UG 2027 may be conducted in five or six days, and about 5 lakh candidates may be appearing each day, reports suggest. NTA has not officially declared the number of shifts.
If students take different papers in different shifts, then one paper may appear to be tougher than the other. Normalisation is a process that normalises scores across shifts. JEE Main is a percentile based calculation. NTA has not specified the method NEET will follow.
Computer Time Management & Rough Work
You can't doodle a question on a screen. Students are given sheets for rough work in computer-based exams like JEE Main conducted by NTA. This has not been confirmed by NTA for NEET 2027.
Time management is also changing. You get one question at a time, not a page. Figure out how many minutes per question and per subject you will spend. You can use the palette or the review option to come back to skipped questions.

How to Prepare for NEET 2027 in CBT Mode?
Take Full-Length Mocks on Screen
Choose a fixed day of the week. Do the whole thing without any breaks. Get a laptop or desktop with a mouse. Not a phone. Make a list of the questions that you skipped and guessed on each mock.
Chapter-wise MCQ Practice to Build Speed
Speed is developed over days of practice, not over one big mock. Solve 30-50 Questions/chapter. Time yourself. Highlight the topics that you spend the most time on.
Practice NCERT-based Questions & Previous Year Papers
Read NCERT line by line, especially in biology. Then solve previous year papers to understand how questions are framed. Oswaal NEET previous year papers, chapter-wise questions and sample papers are apt at this stage. Also solve some papers on screen so that you get used to the format.
Revised Using Brief Notes & Formula Sheets
Make a page of notes for each chapter. Add in the formulas, reactions, important diagrams and facts that you always forget. Check these notes twice a week. Short notes are most useful in the last month.
