The Joint Entrance Examination Main (JEE Main) is the gateway to India’s top engineering colleges. It is a highly competitive exam, and knowing its format is crucial for exam preparation. Therefore, if you are preparing to ace JEE Mains, then this blog is for you!

Exam Format:

There are two papers of JEE Main as below:

Paper-1 (B.E./B.Tech): This paper is compulsory for all those aspiring to enter into the field of Engineering. It consists of three sections Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics having 25 questions each.

Paper-2 (B.Arch/B.Planning): Students seeking admissions in B.Arch and B.Planning programmes have to appear in Paper II only. It has three parts: Mathematics (30 questions), Aptitude Test (50 questions) and Drawing Test (2 questions).

Question Types:

Both papers have two types of questions.

Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs): Each MCQ has four alternative answers, out of which there is only one correct answer. Each correct MCQ carries +4 marks, while there will be a minus marking of -1 for every wrong answer.

Numerical Value Questions (NVQs): These are numerical value type single digit integer type questions. Every NVQs question requires rounding off up to four decimal points but no negative marking applies on them.

Exam Duration and Attempts:

For Paper-1 & Paper-2A (B.Arch):

3 hours duration

Attempt any 75 questions out of 90 in total from each subject with equal weightage, i.e., 25 from each section in Paper-1, and leave 5 questions from Section B for all three subjects in Paper-2A.

For Paper-2B-B.Planning:

3 hours duration

Attempt any 100 questions out of 105 with equal weightage i.e., leaving five questions out of the mathematics section
