What is SSC CGL?

The Combined Graduate Level Examination (SSC CGL) is a competitive examination of national level, which is administered by the Staff Selection Commission to recruit to Group B and Group C positions in the central government departments, ministries, and offices. 

The test is administered in various levels online. The initial step in structured preparation is to understand the new SSC CGL syllabus 2026.

SSC CGL 2026 Exam Pattern Overview

The exam is divided into two phases, Tier 1 and Tier 2.

Tier 1 consists of 100 questions with four subjects having equal representation. Tier 2 consists of several parts of Paper 1 (compulsory) and other papers of certain posts.

In both levels negative marking is used. At Tier 1, the deduction of 0.50 marks is made per wrong answer. In Tier 2 Paper 1, 1 mark is deducted in most sections.

Tier 1 Syllabus SSC CGL 2026

Tier 1 consists of four parts of equal marks, General Intelligence and Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude, English Comprehension and General Awareness. The sections have 25 questions each and 50 marks.

General Intelligence & Reasoning

This part is a test of logical and analytical skills. The questions are founded on analogy, coding-decoding, series of numbers and alphabets, syllogism, blood relations, direction test, statement-conclusion, mirror images, embedded figures and non-verbal reasoning.

 It is a moderate level of difficulty, which is mostly conceptual.

Quantitative Aptitude

The Quant section determines the numerical capability up to Class 10 level. These are percentage, ratio and proportion, profit and loss, time and work, time-speed-distance, simple and compound interest, algebraic identities, geometry, trigonometry, mensuration, and data interpretation. 

High scores require speed and accuracy.

English Comprehension

English section is concerned with grammar and vocabulary. It contains error detection, fill in the blanks, synonyms and antonyms, idioms and phrases, active-passive voice, direct-indirect speech, cloze test, and reading comprehension.

 Practice makes one more precise.

General Awareness

General Awareness consists of the static GK and current affairs. Questions are posed based on Indian history, polity, economy, geography, science, government schemes, awards and latest happenings within the last 6-8 months. 

This part needs a good revision instead of thorough theoretical analysis.

The primary scoring phase is Tier 2. The Tier 2 performance is the basis of final merit.

All the candidates are required to take Paper 1.

Detailed SSC CGL Subject Wise Syllabus – Tier 2

Paper 1: Mathematical Abilities

This part includes number systems, algebra, geometry, mensuration, trigonometry, statistics and probability. The level is a combination of Class 10 and 12 mathematics. 

Questions are computational and need to be conceptually clear.

Reasoning & General Intelligence

Tier 2 reasoning consists of verbal and non-verbal reasoning, puzzles, sitting arrangement, matrix-based questions, logical deduction and higher order pattern recognition. It is more analytical as compared to Tier 1.

English Language & Comprehension

Long reading comprehension passages, vocabulary based questions, sentence correction, para jumbles, grammar use and summary based questions are represented in this section. The level is higher than Tier 1.

General Awareness

Syllabus includes polity, economy, history, geography, science, current affairs, budget and basic of economic survey. Questions are true and might need conceptual connection.

Computer Knowledge Test

This qualifying section comprises computer basics, hardware and software basics, operating systems, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, internet use, email and cybersecurity basics.

Paper 2: Statistics (For JSO Post)

The statistics paper comprises of gathering and reporting of data, central tendency and dispersion measures, probability theory, correlation and regression, time series, and index numbers. 

The present paper needs graduation level knowledge.

Paper 3: Finance & Economics (For AAO Post)

Finance subjects are financial accounting, journal and ledger entries, depreciation and basic accounting principles. Economics encompasses micro economics, macro economics, national income, fiscal policy, monetary policy and inflation.
