Student's mental health is an important factor when it comes to learning and development. One of the most valuable things that teachers can do is to recognize when their students are not okay and then do everything in their power to make sure that their students are healthy, happy, and balanced.

The Steps To Support Mental Health in School

Teachers can apply the following techniques to support the mental health of students in school:

  • Recognizing the Signs of Struggle

The first rule in helping learners cope with stress is identifying when they may be stressed. Some of the symptoms of stress or anxiety may include alteration in behaviour and or mood, difficulty in paying attention to tasks, and a sumptuous retreat from activities.

Any student who has made an abrupt change, for example, has stopped speaking or performed poorly in a class may require assistance. In this way, teachers can prevent or control the problem before it gets out of hand.

  • Creating a Safe and Inclusive Environment

There is a great difference if the classroom is friendly – receptive. Make yourself available to the students to avoid a dangerous situation where students feel that they cannot discuss their stress with you. Always make each student feel that they are important in the class no matter what background they belong to.

Small things such as hugging them, listening to their complaints, and telling them that it is okay to have such feelings provide the students with an environment in which they can share their feelings without being ashamed of what they are going through.

  • Encouraging Healthy Coping Mechanisms

Help the students handle stress levels effectively. Short mindfulness exercises, breathing exercises, or short relaxation sessions should be added to the daily schedule. These are some small things that can contribute to decreasing anxiety levels and increasing focus.

Even a little movement can also help with mental health as it is also healthy to encourage people to be more active.

  • Promoting a Balanced Lifestyle

Encourage the students to engage in other activities to remind them that they shouldn't be overloaded with classes. I suggest that you take up some activities such as work, paintings, games, or any other similar interest.

Remind them that it is possible to reduce time pressure and time crashes by merely taking breaks and learning how to organize time properly. It assists students to cope with a lot of pressure that comes with academic progress while keeping healthy.

  • Encouraging Peer Support

Peer relationships play an important role in a student's life. Promote group work and peer-related activities that facilitate friendly interaction with other kids.

This doesn't make the students feel isolated, and it will be good to ensure that there are chances for the students to assist each other. Inculcate in students the virtue of compassion and caring so that they can support one another during difficult times.

  • Collaborating with School Counselors

If a student has problems that are not related to learning, it is necessary to involve school counsellors. They are well-trained personnel who can help out with more recommendations and information.

Teachers should not feel embarrassed to recommend students to counselors when they are needed so that they can get the right assistance.

Conclusion

Helping students with their mental health issues in schools is crucial for the student's well-being and academic achievements. Early identification of problems and cooperation with particular mental health workers and parents allows teachers to support students' achievements and well-being.
