UPSC Mains 2026 – Exam Pattern

The best way to prepare for the UPSC Mains exam begins from the day you pass the UPSC Prelims exam. The Mains exam will be approximately 3-4 months away. Here are some of the ways you can make the best use of that time. 

The first and most important thing is that you don't start again. You've already covered a lot for Prelims. Now you have to delve deeper into the same topics and learn to write about them in long answers. Make sure to grasp concepts, not just facts.

In UPSC Mains, every answer should be of three parts. Introduce yourself at the beginning so that you are able to demonstrate your understanding of the question. Second, the main body in which you make your points is clearly illustrated with examples, data, diagrams, etc., if necessary. Third, a conclusion that gives a forward-looking or balanced view. 

Write approximately 150 words for a 10-mark question. Write 200-250 words for a 15-mark question. Do not write more than the word limit. Hundreds of copies are checked by examiners. They like clear, concise, and organised responses. 

Write at least 2-3 answers per day. If possible, take part in a test series. Having an expert look at your answers will help you learn a lot quicker than if you were to do it on your own.

Essay Writing for UPSC Mains

The Essay paper is Paper I and is worth 250 marks. Most students ignore it and just concentrate on GS papers. This is a big mistake. With a good essay, you can obtain 140 to 160 marks, which is a significant boost to your score. 

In the Essay paper, you have to write two essays of 1000 to 1200 words each. The topics may be anything related to philosophy, society, economy, technology, or current affairs. It's not necessary to write everything you know about a topic. Rather, compose in a formal, balanced, and reflective manner.
