GATE Exam Pattern 2027: Marking Scheme, Paper Pattern & Section-wise Marks
The GATE 2027 Exam Pattern is expected to follow the same structure as previous years. The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is a Computer-Based Test (CBT) consisting of 65 questions worth 100 marks, to be completed in 3 hours (180 minutes). The exam tests candidates on General Aptitude, Engineering Mathematics (in most papers), and their core engineering/science subject.

The distribution of questions between Engineering Mathematics and Core Subject may vary slightly by paper. Papers such as Physics (PH), Chemistry (CY), and Mathematics (MA) do not have a separate Engineering Mathematics section — the 85 marks are entirely from the core discipline.

1. Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ)

GATE Score Calculation
GATE score is not simply the raw marks obtained. It is calculated using a normalization formula across multiple sessions to ensure fairness:
GATE Score = Sq + (St – Sq) × [(M – Mq) / (M̄t – Mq)]
Where:

M = Marks obtained by candidate

Mq = Qualifying marks (paper-wise)

M̄t = Mean marks of top 0.1% (or top 10, whichever is higher)

Sq = 350 (Score assigned to qualifying marks)

St = 900 (Score assigned to top candidates)
The GATE score ranges from 0 to 1000.
Tips to Tackle GATE Exam Pattern Effectively

Prioritize NAT and MSQ questions — no negative marking means you can attempt these without penalty.

Be cautious with MCQs — 1/3 or 2/3 deduction can significantly hurt your score.

Allocate time wisely — General Aptitude (15 marks) should take no more than 25–30 minutes.

Attempt Engineering Mathematics first if you're confident, as it's a reliable scoring section.
