How to Study from NCERT Books Effectively
Reading NCERT books the right way is different from reading a novel. Here is a chapter-wise strategy:
Step 1: Read the Introduction Every NCERT chapter begins with an introductory paragraph that summarizes what the chapter covers. This gives you a mental framework before diving in.
Step 2: Read the Full Chapter Once Without Stopping Do not look up every unfamiliar term in the first read. Get the overall picture first.
Step 3: Re-read with Note-Making On the second read, underline key terms, definitions, formulas, and examples. Write brief notes alongside.
Step 4: Solve NCERT In-Text Questions These appear in the middle of chapters (shown as boxes). They are often directly asked in exams. Do not skip them.
Step 5: Solve NCERT Exercises at the End of the Chapter All questions from NCERT exercises are important. In Science subjects, these include both conceptual and numerical problems. Solve every one.
Step 6: Solve NCERT Exemplar (Optional but Recommended) NCERT also publishes Exemplar books with higher-order questions beyond the main textbook. These are excellent for advanced preparation.

Frequently Asked Questions
NCERT is sufficient for most theory portions. However, for subjects like Maths and Physics, additional numerical practice beyond NCERT exercises is highly recommended for exam readiness.
NCERT updates textbooks periodically — not every year. However, it is important to check the edition you are using matches the current CBSE syllabus. For 2026-27, refer to the NCERT website for the latest editions.
Yes, especially for Biology, Chemistry, History, and Economics where exam questions are framed directly from NCERT paragraphs. In Mathematics, focus more on exercises than theory prose.
They are not mandatory but highly useful, especially for Science subjects. Exemplar questions represent the HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skills) category and prepare you for challenging exam questions.
Yes. NCERT Class 11 and 12 textbooks form the conceptual foundation for JEE (Physics, Chemistry, Maths) and NEET (Physics, Chemistry, Biology). Thorough mastery of NCERT is the essential first step for any competitive exam preparation.
