NDA Exam Pattern 2026 — Full Overview at a Glance

As you can see, Paper II (GAT) has double the marks of Paper I (Maths). GAT is worth 600 marks, and Maths is worth 300 marks. Both papers are objective type (multiple choice), and each question has 4 answers, only one of which is correct. The exam will be 5 hours long, with each paper being 2.5 hours.

Paper I: NDA Maths Syllabus — What Topics Are Covered?

The topics in the NDA maths syllabus are from class 10, 11 and 12 level Mathematics. It is intended to assess logical reasoning and calculation abilities. There are 120 questions, each with 2.5 marks. 

The major topics of the NDA maths syllabus are Algebra, Matrices and Determinants, Trigonometry, Analytical Geometry (2D and 3D), Differential Calculus, Integral Calculus and Differential Equations, Vector Algebra, and Statistics and Probability. 

The two parts of algebra and trigonometry are often combined and generally constitute the bulk of the paper. The General Knowledge section has 100 questions and 400 marks. This is the largest portion of the NDA exam. Typically, the Physics and Chemistry questions in the paper are based on the NCERT books of class 11 and 12. NDA Marking Scheme — How Are Marks Calculated?

Maths vs GAT — Where Should You Focus More?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions by the NDA aspirants. The answer is: You must pay close attention to both, but your own attention should be based on your strengths and weaknesses. 

GAT has twice the marks of Maths (600:300) and hence a larger contribution to the total score of 900. Scoring well in GAT will greatly enhance your overall ranking. Don't overlook GAT because there are so many subjects. In fact, there are 400 marks in the General Knowledge section of GAT, which is more than the total marks of the Maths paper. 

But there is one subject in which you can score very regularly, if you practise well, which is Maths. Maths problems have fixed formulas and rules as compared to General Knowledge, which relies on reading and remembering. With regular practice, a student who is good at Maths can get 200 or more out of 300, thus providing a strong foundation for the total score. 

This is the best thing to do: spend about 40% of the total study time on Maths and 60% of the total study time on GAT. In GAT, allocate additional time for General Knowledge (particularly Physics, Chemistry and Current Events) as it carries the highest marks. For most students, English is easier and requires less time, so it is not necessary to spend a lot of time on it.

How to Prepare for NDA Maths in 2026

Practice makes perfect is the key to success in the nda maths syllabus. You can't memorise mathematics; you need to solve problems every day to improve your skills. 

Use NCERT books for Class 11 and 12. Ensure that each concept is understood before progressing to more difficult practice questions. After the basics is secured, solve the questions topic-wise from the NDA Mathematics book. Solve at least 20-30 maths questions daily. Solving the previous year's NDA question papers is also one of the best methods to get a grip on the difficulty level and the kind of questions that are asked. 

Spend more time on Algebra and Trigonometry as they have the highest number of questions. Next, go to Calculus and Matrices. Do not leave any topic completely — even a single topic can contribute 5 to 10 questions in the paper.

How to Prepare for NDA GAT in 2026

The approach to the preparation of NDA GAT syllabus is different from that of Maths. The most crucial habits here are reading, revision and keeping up to date. 

In the English section, read a short passage of English each day and practice finding errors in the English grammar. The Wren and Martin Grammar book is the best book for grammar. Vocabulary: Aim to learn 5 – 10 words daily with basic flashcards or a notebook. 

The NCERT books from Class 6 to Class 12 of History, Geography, Physics and Chemistry are to be read for General Knowledge. Nearly all of the material that NDA requests in this section is covered in these books. Current affairs: Read a daily newspaper or use a good monthly GK magazine. Take brief notes on key events, government initiatives, sports outcomes and science updates. 

Revision is the key to success in GAT. After three days and after a week, revise what you've studied, no matter what it is. This aids your brain to remember for a longer time.
