GATE Cut Off 2027: Expected Cutoff, Previous Year Cutoff, PSU Cutoff & Qualifying Marks
The GATE 2027 Cut Off refers to the minimum qualifying marks that candidates must secure to be considered as "GATE qualified." The cutoff is released paper-wise and category-wise along with the GATE result by IIT Madras. Candidates who score equal to or above the qualifying cutoff receive a GATE scorecard valid for 3 years.
It is important to distinguish between two types of cutoffs in GATE:
-
Qualifying Cutoff — Minimum marks to receive a GATE scorecard (released by the conducting IIT).
-
Admission/PSU Cutoff — Higher threshold set by individual IITs, NITs, or PSUs for shortlisting.
GATE 2027 Expected Qualifying Cutoff (Based on Trends)
The official GATE 2027 cutoff will be released with the result in March 2027. Based on GATE 2025 and 2026 data, the expected qualifying marks are:
|
Category |
Expected Qualifying Cutoff (Out of 100) |
|
General / EWS |
28–37 |
|
OBC-NCL |
25–33 |
|
SC / ST / PwD |
19–25 |
OBC-NCL and EWS candidates receive a 10% relaxation over the General category cutoff. SC, ST, and PwD candidates receive a 33.3% relaxation.

Factors That Affect GATE 2027 Cutoff
The qualifying cutoff for GATE 2027 will depend on several key factors:
|
Factor |
Impact on Cutoff |
|
Exam Difficulty Level |
Tougher exam → lower cutoff; easier exam → higher cutoff |
|
Total Number of Candidates |
More candidates → higher competition → slightly higher cutoff |
|
Number of Qualified Candidates |
IIT determines cutoff based on statistical normalization |
|
Overall Performance of Candidates |
If top performers score very high, the mean shifts upward |
|
Paper-specific trends |
Engineering and science papers differ significantly |
PSU Cutoff Through GATE 2027
PSU recruitment cutoffs are much higher than the GATE qualifying cutoff. These are set by individual PSUs after GATE results are declared:

How GATE Qualifying Marks Are Calculated
The GATE qualifying marks are not set manually — they are computed using a statistical normalization formula. The key components of the formula are:
-
Mean marks of all candidates in the paper.
-
Standard deviation of marks in the paper.
-
Performance of the top 0.1% candidates (or top 10, whichever is higher).
The formula ensures that the cutoff reflects the overall performance distribution of that paper's candidates, making it fair across different sessions and difficulty levels.
